While it is okay to try home remedies, use discretion.an, call a veterinarian immediately. Early detection is key to insuring your puppy’s good health. These tips could help you until you can get proper medical attention.

Tick Removal:

Please forward to anyone with children, hunters or dogs; or anyone who even steps outside in summer! A School Nurse has written the info below--good enough to share--and it really works!

"I had a pediatrician tell me what she believes is the best way to remove a tick. This is great because it works in those places where it's sometimes difficult to get to with tweezers: between toes, in the middle of a head full of dark hair, etc."

"Apply a glob of liquid soap to a cotton ball. Cover the tick with the soap-soaked cotton ball and swab it for a few seconds (15-20); the tick will come out on its own and be stuck to the cotton ball when you lift it away. This technique has worked every time I've used it (and that was frequently), and it's much less traumatic for the patient and easier for me.." "Unless someone is allergic to soap, I can't see that this would be damaging in any way. I even had my doctor's wife call me for advice because she had one stuck to her back and she couldn't reach it with tweezers. She used this method and immediately called me back to say, "It worked!" Home-Made Skunk Spray:

Instructions skunk spray
 1. The skunk odor remover will consist of hydrogen peroxide (3%), dish soap and baking soda.
2 This can be safely used on dogs, cats and other pets.
You'll need: One quart of hydrogen peroxide; 1/4 cup of baking soda; and two tablespoons of dish soap.

Mix the ingredients together until the baking soda is completely dissolved.

4 Apply generous amounts of the skunk odor removal solution to the affected area using a sponge. Saturate the fur of the area that was sprayed by the skunk. Be careful when applying the solution near the eyes.

5 Allow this homemade skunk odor removal solution to sit for ten minutes. During this time, massage the solution into the dog's fur and skin.

6 Use warm running water to rinse the solution from the pet's fur.

7 Bathe the dog with normal dog shampoo and conditioner to give the dog's fur a fresh smell - that's for people who don't enjoy a dog who smells like lemoney fresh dish soap following a skunk spraying incident.

Diarrhea in your dog:

Try: Take away all food and water for 24 hours. Do not take away water if your dog seems dehydrated . Then (after 24 hours), instead of their usual dog food, give your dog small servings of a bland diet 4 to 5 times throughout the day.

Choose from:

  • cooked white rice (no butter or flavorings)
  • cottage cheese (no liquid)
  • boiled chicken (no grease, no skin, no flavorings)
  • boiled turkey (no grease, no skin, no flavorings)
  • scrambled egg (no butter or oil)
  • boiled egg (no butter or oil)
  • boiled potato (no skin or flavorings)
  • baked potato (no skin or flavorings)

OR TRY: 1tbsp-1/2 cup of raw pumpkin(depends on the size of dog) and again no food for 24hr.

OR TRY:Metamucil mixed in water at a rate of 1part metamucil to 5 parts water

Upset Stomach:

Try :. The natural way is to "eat grass"

Try: Feed bland diet of rice

Dehyration:

Try: Pedialyte. If your dog suffers from mild dehydration—signs include a dry mouth, panting, and a loss of skin elasticity—pour Pedialyte into his water bowl to quickly replace electrolytes. Drinking water will replace most electrolytes, but drinking this solution, formulated for babies, quickly replaces minerals like potassium and sodium.

Ear Infection Prevention, This is not a cure"!!!

I find prevention by regular cleaning can help:

TRY:Minimizing an ear infection from worsening by mix two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in one cup of water. Try to get the dog to drink this twice a week. The same solution can also be used to clean a dog’s ear.

TRY:Another gentle solution is white vinegar and warm water, in a 1 to 1 ratio. You may make it with 1/3 vinegar and 2/3 water, but make sure there is enough vinegar so there isn’t water left standing in the ear. The vinegar helps to dry out the ear.

TRY:Vitamin E Oil:
Like human ear infections, a dog ear infection can be caused by the build up of wax and debris. The best ointment to use to rinse the inner ear is vitamin E oil. Not only will it break away any build-up that has occurred but it will also sooth and calm irritation.

Eye Infection Prevention: This is not a cure!!!

Again prevention by regular cleaning can minimize:

TRY:A warm (not hot) tea bag for soothing infected or irritated eyes.

TRY: 1/2tsp salt to 1 glass of lukewarm water, stir to disolve and wipe eyes or any other mild saline solution.

TRY: Make a pot of chamomile tea,let it cool and wipe eyes.

Apple Cider Vinegar for Dogs

...Every home with dogs should have apple cider vinegar. It's a remedy with multiple uses for dogs: alleviating allergies, arthritis, establishing correct pH balance. You can also give apple cider vinegar to cats and horses.

...If your dog has itchy skin, the beginnings of a hot spot, incessantly washes its feet, has smelly ears, or is picky about his food, the application of ACV may change things around. For poor appetite, use it in the food - 1 tablespoon, two times a day for a 50 lb. dog. For itchy skin or beginning hot spots, put ACV into a spray bottle, part the hair and spray on. Any skin eruption will dry up in 24 hours and will save you having to shave the dog. If the skin is already broken, dilute ACV with an equal amount of water and spray on.

..If you have a dog that has clear, watery discharge from the eyes, a runny nose, or coughs with a liquid sound, use ACV in his or her food. One teaspoon twice a day for a 50 lb. dog will do the job.

...Other uses for ACV are the prevention of muscle weakness, cramps, feeling the cold, calluses on elbows and hock joints, constipation, bruising too easily, pimples on skin surfaces, twitching of facial muscles, sore joints, arthritis and pus in the urine. There are also reports that it is useful in the prevention of bladder and kidney stones.

...Mix, 5 ounces of Heinz Apple Cider Vinegar, and 5 ounces of water in a trigger-spray bottle. Shake well. Spray the solution on whatever furniture your dog likes to chew.

To heal cuts and scrapes:

Try: Bag Balm. Quicken healing of cuts, scratches, skin irritations, and paw abrasions by rubbing on Bag Balm, the salve created to soften cow udders. THIS WORKS..I use it. Also great for your own hands, makes them nice and soft!
